After a blockbuster title-decider in the last round of the season, Moreland and Fitzroy dominate the Team of the Season selection for SFV 2021.
By Kosta Diamantopoulos
Without a doubt, SFV 2021 was a season to remember for the ups, downs, shocks and moments that occurred throughout the entirety of the campaign. From the newly-promoted Preston shocking the future champions Fitzroy to the Tigers winning the title on the last match of the season against rivals Moreland, #SFV21 has provided the futsal community with many amazing performances from the league's top talent.
The Blues and the Tigers just about share the Team of the Season spoils as both clubs needed to bring out the best in each other to meet face-to-face in the last round of an incredibly challenging season, but it is the Champions who dominate the coveted starting line-up positions.
Goalkeeper: Peter Tamburrino
In a league where outstanding goalkeeping performances consistently prove to be so decisive, it was Peter Tamburrino's Fitzroy who conceded the least amount of goals by a staggering amount. Only seeing the ball strike the back of their net 34 times in the season, the Tigers managed to concede 20 less goals then the second-placed Blues who finished the season with 54. Tamburrino played a large part in that statistic, claiming three Team of the Weeks and three Man of the Matches in a standout season.
Anchor: Scott Rogan
There is no tying Scott Rogan to one single position on a Series Futsal court anymore as 'The Flash' has cultivated himself as undoubtedly the league's most versatile player through his relentless engine and intelligent movement. With Veteran anchor Andre Caro being introduced into the team during the season, Rogan found himself with much more freedom to play forward and continue to be an attacking menace in every match he played. Rogan would ultimately finish the season with an impressive 26 goals and 24 assists in 16 games, proving his crucial role in his sides inevitable success.
Flanker (Left): Josh Allen
After what can be considered a break-out campaign in 2020/21, Josh Allen was on a mission from the get-go of the 2021 season to solidify himself as one of the league's most dangerous attacking outlets. Allen has showed seasonal improvements throughout the last few years, capping off his rise to SFV star-status with a season of the highest regard. His statistics may fall just short to some of the players on this list, but Allen proved his worth when it mattered most, in Fitzroy's biggest games of the season. With 21 goals, 16 assists and 3 man of the match awards in 15 games, the tireless attacker is rewarded with a Team of the Season selection.
Flanker (Right): Jose Filho
In a season that his side fell just short of the title in the last round, Jose Filho can certainly claim that this was one of his most prolific seasons in his career. 'Pepe' truly hit ridiculous form late in the season during a period that he was simply unplayable, achieving three man of the match awards in a row against Carlton Heart, Western Wolves and Campbellfield. The little Brazilian complimented a fantastic goal tally of 28 goals with a decent number of assists at 16, confirming 44 goal contributions and proving to be absolutely vital in his side's season-long title challenge.
Target: Cosimo Russo
The inevitable and undeniable man up top proves to once again be the goal-scoring addicted Cosimo Russo, claiming his fourth golden boot in a row in another mammoth outing. The 23 year old is known for his close-range finishes, continuing to flex his reputation as the goal-merchant at the end of every Moreland attack. Russo confirmed a stunning 40 goals and complimented his golden boot with a ridiculous 25 assists, claiming the league's most goal contributions in the process at 65.
